I will be doing my own thing, just like being at my own home town, food some shopping and getting around. How much money would i need for a 2 week trip ($australian).

You didn;t mention hotel accomodations so I assume you already have those covered. Food is very cheap in Shanghai. Be sure to try xiao long bao. For 2 weeks, I would suggest $800 and that will get you around very nicely.
In a way how far will your australian$ carry you will depend on your tastes. You can get by relatively cheaply if you depend on local food and do not opt for international restaurants. Also if you use the subway system vs. cabs.
Where you stay will be also important — i.e. proximity to good food and interesting places to see…But overall $800-$1000 australian should be plenty and allow you to buy some presents too.
